I plugged also my megadrive on my PVM last week end and run through similar questions and trials...
Finally got it to work nicely by turning on the sync and changing the mode to RGB...

Ntsc snes run in 60hz. It is usually nicer to play on... Higher frame rate so smoother gameplay...
I would suggest to grab a cheap on on ebay...
